Sentara Norfolk General Hospital: A Magnet® Hospital
Sentara Norfolk General Hospital was the first in southeastern Virginia to be named a Magnet® Hospital by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Magnet® designation is the highest credential that a healthcare organization can earn for nursing excellence and quality patient care. Less than 10 percent of U.S. hospitals have this designation.
Magnet® hospitals encourage and support evidence based practice, professional growth and decision-making by nurses at all levels. Across the U.S., Magnet® designation has shown a benefit in decreased nurse turnover, increased nurse satisfaction, reduced patient mortality and decreased patient length of stay.
Sentara Norfolk General Hospital nurses practice on a foundation of safety and accountability. Nurses participate in shared decision-making councils at the unit, specialty and hospital level to ensure that their practice is based on the latest evidence. Quality measures are also tracked and measured to monitor and improve patient outcomes.
Magnet® designation helps to ensure that nurse excellence, transformational leadership and improved patient outcomes remain at the forefront for our nursing team.
