Our nursing internships are designed to transition new graduates from the classroom to clinical practice or to help experienced nurses transition from one specialty to another. They foster clinical competency, job satisfaction and patient safety.
Our critical care internship is an opportunity for new ICU nurses to develop the skills necessary to deliver safe and competent critical care. The 10 week program consists of lectures, discussion, self-learning online modules, simulation and clinical experience. Our internship provides new nurses the support and guidance to better navigate their role in the critical care environment during their first year.
Fall 2021: October 18 – December 12
Our emergency department offers a competitive six month internship for new graduates and nurses with less than a year of experience. The internship is modified for experienced nurses with no emergency department experience. The progressive program mixes clinical, didactic and interactive education including simulation, rotations to other areas of the hospital and emergency-specific modules.
Labor and Delivery/Antepartum
Our labor and delivery/antepartum internship is a 14 to 16 week intense program that combines didactic and hands-on learning. The first weeks focus on hospital classes, obstetric-specific classes and simulation. This builds the foundation for our interns to transition into working one-on-one with a preceptor for the remainder of the program.
Our perioperative nursing internship is a six month program integrating classroom lectures, online instruction and clinical practicum to produce learning that can be applied daily in the clinical arena. Each intern is also mentored by experienced perioperative nurses in each of our surgical specialties. Clinical rotations offer exposure to each specialty as interns continue to develop confidence as a circulating surgical nurse. Participants also receive a membership to the Association of PeriOperative Registered Nurses, the premier professional nursing organization for perioperative nurses.
Post Anesthesia Care Unit
Our post anesthesia care unit internship is designed to prepare medical surgery and operating room nurses to care for critical patients in the unit. The 14 to 19 week program is administered in the clinical environment, classroom and online. Interns also spend time with a preceptor in the burn trauma unit or neurosurgical ICU and work with a respiratory therapist to learn the indications for oxygen support. At the end of the internship, interns prepare a presentation of their projects.
Student Nurse Internship Program
The Student Nurse Internship Program is an early workforce recruitment initiative offered by Sentara Norfolk General Hospital for senior nursing students completing their last two semesters of an accredited nursing program. The annual summer program provides aspiring nurses with unique opportunities to earn premium pay while working as student nurses in our acute care facility. For more information, please contact Keshia Blakeney at KXHAROLD@sentara.com.
Nurse Preceptor Program
The Nurse Preceptor Program prepares experienced nurses to become preceptors who serve as leaders, role models, socializers and teachers. Nurse preceptors help newly hired or newly graduated nurses transition into functioning independently in a professional nursing role to provide safe and competent care. This requires ongoing support, guidance and instruction from preceptors who demonstrate effective clinical, critical thinking, teaching, interpersonal, communication, decision making and evaluation skills.
